The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is seeking an Executive Director to lead the Municipal Land Use Center @ The College of New Jersey (MLUC@TCNJ).

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President the Executive Director is responsible for leading this externally-funded center of The College. The Executive Director oversees the work of a small staff of dedicated professionals and student interns. MLUC@TCNJ focus is working closely with State government agencies and enhancing planning capacities of local jurisdictions, with special emphases on providing technical and financial assistance related to transportation planning and local land-use decision-making, smart growth, new urbanism and sustainability. Initially focused on central Jersey, the Centers geographic scope has since expanded throughout New Jersey.

Responsibilities: Working with an engaged advisory council, articulates and implements the mission of the Center; writes proposals and engages in other external fund-seeking to ensure on-going financial support for Center projects and staff (including the Executive Director position); guides and supports the grant-seeking activities of Center staff; develops and maintains relationships and, as contracted, works closely with State government agencies to enhance planning capacities of the state; works closely with local jurisdictions statewide to enhance their planning capacities; provides the most relevant and up-to-date technical and financial assistance related to transportation planning and local land-use decision-making, smart growth, new urbanism and sustainability; engages in applied research related to important planning issues affecting the State of New Jersey and its local jurisdictions, through grant-funded activities; project development and management; and works with TCNJ faculty and staff to integrate real-world issues into appropriate academic experiences which may include mentoring interns and students in the Community-Based Learning program, and/or part-time teaching.

Professional Experience: Senior-level experience in public administration, planning, and non-profit management is preferred, although candidates with relevant academic administration or private sector experience may also be considered. A demonstrated ability to secure substantial grants awards and other external funding is strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to be an effective problem-solver and communicator. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with New Jersey State, county and municipal governments, and other public and private institutions and agencies. Familiarity with such planning concepts as smart growth, new urbanism, sustainability, and state and local governance is preferred. The ability to work with a committed, experienced advisory council, and to perform as an effective problem-solver and communicator in articulating a compelling vision to a variety of interested publics and stakeholders.

Educational Credentials: Masters Degree in planning, public administration or some other appropriate field from an accredited institution of higher learning is required. A Ph.D. or J.D. degree may be preferred.
